topic 1 - cell structure Flashcards
What is the function of the cell membrane?
It is selectively permeable and controls what enters and leaves a cell
What is a cell?
They are basic units of living organisms
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
It is where most cellular reactions occur
What are the functions of ribosomes?
They are the site of protein synthesis
What is the function of the cell wall?
Provides shape and support for bacterial, fungal and plant cells
What cell does not have a cell wall?
The animal cell
What is the function of the mitochondria?
The site if aerobic respiration in all cells except bacteria
What do plant cells have that no other type of cell has?
Chloroplasts which make food by photosynthesis
What is the function of the nucleus?
Controls all cell activities in all cells apart from bacteria cell
What is the function of a plasmid?
These transfer genes from one bacterium to another and are only found in bacterial cells
What is the purpose of staining cells?
It makes some parts of the cell more visible under a microscope
What units are used to measure cells?
Micrometer
What is the scale of equivalence of micrometers to millimetres?
One millimetre = 1000 micrometers
