topic 5: viruses Flashcards
what is a pathogen
an organism which causes disease
what is a virus
a very small pathogen that uses the biochemistry of the host cell to make copies of itself then release until the bloodstream
what is a bacteria
a small pathogen that multiplies very quickly through binary fission and produces toxins
what’s a fungi
a single celled pathogen or a pathogen made hyphae that produces spores.
what is a protist
a pathogen that can be parasitic (uses plants and animals as host)
description of cholera
bacteria pathogen, diarrhoea, spread through water
description of tuberculosis
bacteria pathogen, lung damage, airborne
description of chalara ash dieback
fungi pathogen, leaf loss, airborne
description of malaria
protist pathogen, damage to blood and liver, animal vector
description of HIV
virus, destroys WBC, spread through bodily fluids
description of helicobacter
bacteria, stomach ulcers, oral transmission
description of ebola
virus, hemorrhagic fever, spread through body fluids.
describe the lytic pathway
using the host cell it replicates the virus DNA, these are form to make new virus particles, once the host cell is full it bursts(lysis), the process then repeats with nearby cells
describe the lysogenic pathway
virus uses restriction enzymes to insert its DNA into host cells DNA, host cells DNA replicates and so does the virus DNA, the lytic cycle then begins.
