When is technology used?
It is used in analysing performance, engaging spectators, supporting officials and in the development of coaching
Where can the increasing use of technology be seen?
In the development of performance as well as the equipment and clothing the performer uses and wears.
Why is technology used?
Technology is used to identify strengths, track improvements and can act as a motivational tool for the athlete; more accurate and consistent decisions for the official and engagement for the spectators.
What are the 3 reasons why coaches use technology?
- To make judgements more objective, using data to inform team selection
- To identify strengths and areas for improvements.
- Develop training programmes
What does movement analysis help to do?
Identify strengths and weaknesses to improve technique
Helps prevent injury by developing the correct techniques
Why do officials use technology? (2)
Officials use technology to:
- Communicate with other officials
- Decision-making through replays and 4th officials
Why does the media use technology? (4)
The media uses technology to:
•Widen coverage of sports through social media and more in-depth coverage within
sports.
•Offer the statistical information that would usually be used by coaches.
•Give 24/7 coverage, information, and interviews.
•Commercialize sport through betting and advertising.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of technology in sport for athletes

Advantages:
Better performance – marginal gains make the difference
Better medical care results in fewer injuries or faster recovery from injury
Feedback from coaches is more focused, objective and helpful
Improved kit is more comfortable, more efficient and safer
Part of a team, not isolated
Disadvantages:
Invades privacy
Blurs lines between personal and professional time
Availability and cost – makes sport and success exclusive to wealthy people and countries
Tempts athletes and coaches into cheating or unfair practices
Puts the sole focus on winning not athletic endeavour

Advantages:
Supports team approach so there is less pressure on individuals
Information can be shared easily and quickly and stored over time
Decisions and scoring are more reliable and accurate
There is increased confidence and trust in officials
Disadvantages:
Slows the game
Not available at all levels of competition
No longer trust people’s decisions
Undermines respect for officials’ knowledge and expertise
Undermines honesty, integrity and the spirit of fair play
