Topic 5: Teacher-pupil relationships Flashcards
What type of students do teachers prefer?
Pupils who are well-behaved, reserved, compliant, and will reward them.
These pupils tend to be white and mc - teachers judge pupils by their own cultural standards.
What do teachers think about the “ideal pupil”?
One who conforms to middle class standards. However, teachers do not consciously ascribe low ability to wc pupils.
What do Gillborn and Youdell (1999) state about teachers and working class students?
Systematically discriminate against the working class as they fail to recognise intelligence because it is not exhibited in the "right way". Hence, they are allocated to lower sets.
What do Gillborn and Youdell (1999) claim is the pupil reaction to teacher labelling?
Respond with resentment.
They may become more hostile and demotivated; negatively impacting their achievement and relationship with teachers.
How does labelling impact relationships between black boys and teachers?
They are angry at being singled out for bad behaviour when whites are also guilty.
They are then drawn to anti-school subcultures which make teacher interactions even more confrontational.
According to American research, reviewed by Sorhagen (2013), do teacher expectations affect school performance?
Yes.
Inaccurate expectations lead to long-term effects, usually on children from lower-income families.
Does teacher labelling always lead to SFP?
NO.
Some students become more determined to do well to disprove the negative label.
