Topic 3: Ethnicity - Material factors Flashcards
Do all ethnic groups have the same chances of living in poverty?
No.
Some groups have a higher chance of living in poverty.
What did Lisa Platt (2011) find about male hourly rates between ethnicities?
Men from Chinese and Indian backgrounds tend to get paid more, whereas those from Bangladeshi and Pakistani groups get paid less.
Do income patterns reflect achievement patterns?
To an extent - Chinese and Indian children do perform, on average, considerably better than other groups, however, one would expect African Caribbean boys to do better given their relative income.
Do inequalities in income reflect entitlement to FSM? If so, how?
YES!!!!!!!
Bangladeshis have the highest entitlement (38.5%), whereas Indians have the lowest (9.7%).
What does DofE (2011) stats show about the relationship between those eligible for FSM and achievement?
In all ethnic groups, those who are eligible do worse than those who do not.
However, to what extent, varies across ethnicities - White Brits are affected by this more, suggesting that cultural factors are also at work.
What did Gilborn and Mirza (2000) find in the study on the effects of social class on ethnic groups in education?
There was a strong relationship between social class and achievement. Those from the middle classes did better, regardless of ethnicity. However, African-Caribbean boys performed particularly poorly against other ethnicities of the same class.
What was Modood’s (2004) argument from cultural capital?
Recent migrants to the UK, despite qualifications, are less likely to get jobs relating to their skills - downwardly mobile.
Thus, they can help their children better than white British parents of the same supposed class.
