Topic 5: Labelling and Self-fulfilling prophecy Flashcards
What was noted about teacher responses to students?
Teachers respond to different groups differently, carrying certain expectations that have an affect.
What are the two ways in which students can respond to teacher labelling, resulting in SFP?
1 - Accept label as true, internalise it and see it as part of their self-concept.
2 - Reject the labelling, conforming to negative assumptions.
What was the impact of the SFP concept in the 70s and 80s?
Led to reform as many began to reject placing students in particular sets or schools based on ability as it harmed low-ability students.
Did the 90s follow the trend of the importance of the SFP?
No. It was given lower priority in the quest for higher grades and league table position.
