New Right Flashcards
What is the fundamental ideology of the New Right?
They are neoliberals:
Free market and private business is desirable as competition drives innovation and success.
How do they agree with Social Democrats and Functionalists?
They all believe that education is necessary for a successful economy.
How do neoliberals perceive state education?
They see it as inefficient and a drain on resources - need more privatisation.
What do Chubb and Moe (1988) contend about state education?
Standards are higher in private schools as they have the constant pressure to improve - they have to please the customer.
From this view, they believe that there needs to be more privatisation in education.
Why is high public spending on education undesirable?
High spending requires high taxes.
These taxes will come from companies - this will act as a disincentive, making them less competitive.
Why are rising standards important in the context of globalisation?
Market liberals see this as important as one’s nation needs to produce better, more skilled workers to compete in a global economy.
Compared to functionalists, are they more or less positive about the ed system? Why?
They are much more negative.
Schools need to be run more like businesses - education is not working.
How do leftist thinkers oppose them?
Marxists and social democrats see state education as the only way to provide equality of opportunity. Private education always puts wealth over wellbeing, and they always favour the rich, wasting working class talent.
