Topic 5 ~ Cells And Classification Flashcards
What is Classification?
Classification is the process by which people place things into groups based on similar characteristics they possess.
What organelles are present in animal and plant cells?
Nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria, vacuole
Only in plant cells: Chloroplast and cell wall
Why do plant cells need two extra organelles?
Plant cells need a cell wall because they do not have a spine. The cell wall is a rigid structure that provides support for the plant cell.
Plant cells also need chloroplast. Chloroplast is a site of photosynthesis which converts carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen.
What is a specialised cell?
A specialised cell is a cell that has become differentiated to carry out a particular function.
What is a white blood cells function and structure?
Structure: They have a flexible shape to help it engulf (eat) disease organisms. They have a nucleus.
Function:
- These cells are found in You blood.
- They are attracted to disease and bacteria that enter your body.
- They then eat any bacteria or disease so the microbe can’t infect you and make you ill.
What is a plant’s root hair cells function and structure?
Function:
They absorb minerals and water from the soil.
Structure:
- Large surface area to absorb lots of water.
- Thin cell wall to allow water to pass through easily.
- Doesn’t contain chloroplasts, like other plant cells.
MRS GREN:
Move: Move in some way. Respire: Breathe. Sensitivity: Detect changes from environment. Growth: Grow. Reproduce: Produce offspring. Excretion: Get rid of waste. Nutrition: Intake and use of nutrients.
