Topic 2 ~ States Of Matter Flashcards
List the 5 states of matter:
Solids, liquids, gases, plasma and Bose-Einstein Condensate
How are their particles arranged?
Solids: Tightly packed together. Vibrate in place.
Liquids: Loosely packed. Flow around each other.
Gases: Move freely. Have lots of energy.
Plasma: Particles are electrically charged.
What is Convection?
Convection: is the transfer of heat by the physical movement of the heated medium itself. Convection occurs in liquids and gases, but not solids. E.g. Boiling water, wind.
What is Conduction?
Conduction: is the transfer of heat as a result of the direct contact of rapidly moving atoms through a medium or from one medium to another, without movement of the media. E.g. Metal
What is Radiation?
Radiation: is the transfer of heat in the form of waves through space. Dull black surfaces are better than white ones at absorbing radiated heat. These waves are called infrared waves. E.g. The sun
