Topic 4 ~ Forces Flashcards
Types of forces:
Push, pull, twist, gravity, wind resistance, friction, magnetic and electrostatic.
Electromagnets:
An electromagnet is a type of magnet in which the magnetic field is produced by an electric current.
For other objects to become charged they have to be touched by the charged object. The object becomes charged because electrons can be transferred to the other object.
A soft metal core made into a magnet by the passage of electric current through a coil surrounding it.
Magnetic fields around a magnet:
The magnetic field is the area around a magnet where it’s magnetic field acts. These fields are invisible. The magnetic field lines are curved around the magnet and are closest together where the magnetic force is the strongest and further apart where the force is weaker.
Balanced and Unbalanced Forces:
A balanced force is when the two forces applied to the object are even. E.g. buoyancy and gravity
An unbalanced force is when two forces that are applied to an object are even, one force is stronger than the other. These forces can speed up, slow down or change the direction of an object. E.g. Driving force and air resistance
How can an electromagnetic become stronger?
We can make an electromagnet stronger by doing these things:
wrapping the coil around an iron core
adding more turns to the coil
increasing the current flowing through the coil.
