Topic 5 - A : Photosynthesis and Respiration Flashcards
Photosynthesis equation
6CO2 + 6H2O = C6H12O6 + 6O2
Aerobic respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6CO2 + 6H2O
Anaerobic respiration (animal)
C6H12O6 = 6CO2 + 6H2O + lactic acid
Anaerobic respiration (plant)
C6H12O6 = 6CO2 + 6H2O + Ethanol

Happens in Matrix of mitochondria
Describe oxidative phosphorylation
NADH and FADH2 release hydrogen atoms which then split into protons and electrons
Electrons move through electron transport train
Energy is used from this to pump protons into intermembrane space
Conc. of protons in intermembrane space > mitochondrial matrix
Protons move back into mitochondria matrix via ATP synthase
This movement encourages the synthesis of ATP
