topic 4 - Bioenergetics Flashcards
symbol equation for photosynthesis
6Co2 + 6H20 into (via light) C6 H12 O6 + 6O2
Is photosynthesis exothermic or endothermic
Endothermic
Give the uses for the glucose made from photosynthesis
used for respiration
converted into insoluble starch for storage
used to produce fat or oil for storage
used to produce cellulose, which strengthens the cell wall
used to produce amino acids for protein synthesis.
Define respiration
An exothermic reaction which transfers energy from glucose and is continuously occuring in living cells
3 reasons why respiration takes place
.To build up larger molecules from smaller ones eg proteins from amino acids
.For muscular contraction
.To maintain our body temp
What is metabolism
All chemical reactions in a living organism in order to maintain life
Give the equations for both anerobic and aerobic respiration
aerobic - glucose + oxygen into carbon dioxide + water
Anaerobic - Glucose into lactic acid (incomplete glucose breakdown- less energy produced)
Anaerobic respiration in plants
glucose into ethanol and carbon dioxide , in yeast this is called fermentation
Ways to optimise photosynthesis for farmers
Greenhouses - can trap the suns heat and stops pests also they can use pestacides
Artificial light - allows photosynthesis to still happen
Co2 pump or use a paraffin heater that heats up and produces Co2 aswell
