Circulatory System Flashcards
What do veins do and what are their characteristics
They carry blood back towards the heart , they have walls that aren’t as thick as artery’s because blood is at low pressure ,but the lumen is wide to help blood flow , they have valves to stop blood flowing in the wrong direction
What do arteries do and what are their characteristics
Arteries carry blood from the heart at high pressure , so the artery walls are thick and strong so they don’t burst ,the walls are also elastic. They have thick layers of muscle to make them strong , they have lumen that isn’t that big
What do capillaries do and what are their characteristics
They supply neutrients, food and oxygen and carry away waste like co2. They have walls that are one cell thick so that it’s easy for substances to diffuse in and out and they are permeable. They carry blood close to every cell to exchange substances , low BP so time for exchange and very small lumen
