Topic 3 General engineering questions Flashcards
How does a dyson work?
What is the difference between a diesel and petrol engine?
A diesel engine ignites a much less flammable fuel by means of compression only. A petrol engine ignites a much more flammable fuel using compression and spark plugs. Diesel fuel is much more energy dense this leads to diesel engines being much more efficient and they produce more torque than a similarly sized petrol engine. Petrol engines have much lower compression ratios than diesel engines.
Describe what engineering standards means to you.
Always follow procedure and the training you have received. This means following all Safe operating procedures put in place by personnel qualified to carry out risk assessments. Don’t take shortcuts as this could lead to injury of personnel and damage of equipment.
Describe while watchkeeping what you would be looking for on rounds.
What is the difference between a gate valve and a globe valve.
What is the difference between a turbocharged engine and a supercharged engine?
A turbocharged engine uses a turbo to increase airflow into the engine. The turbo does this by use of an impeller, the impeller is spun by exhaust gasses exiting the engine on the exhaust stroke. This causes air to be drawn into the engine increasing possible power output.
A supercharged engine uses a supercharger to increase airflow into the engine. The supercharger rather than being powered by exhaust gasses is run off of the crankshaft. A supercharger requires more engine power to run than a turbocharger but can lead to large gains in power when it is being run within the correct powerband.
