Topic 21 Flashcards
IHD formula
IDH =1/2 (2c + 2 - h - x + n)
What does IHD 1-4 mean
1) 1 double bond/ring
2) 1 triple bond/ring and 2 double bond
3) 1 triple and double, 3 double
4) Benzene
If they ask for splitting pattern what are they asking?
Singlet (1 signal), doublet, triplet
signal vs peak
signal is number of proton environments, peak is on the spectroscopy number of lines
Singlet, doublet, triplet, quartet
Singlet - next to C (no H)
Doublet - next to CH
Triplet - next to CH2
Quartet - next to CH3
How many proton environments does propanol have?
4
What is the n + 1 rule
When given compound, number of hydrogens will produce plus one peak on spectrum
applies to peaks not signals
Why is TMS used as reference standard?
Chemical shift is outside range of common chemical shifts
All protons in same environment so singlet
Volatile so easily separated, inert (does not react with other compounds)
