Topic 2: Skull Flashcards
Layers of the skull:
Skin
Connective tissue
Aponeurotic layer
Loose connective tissue
Pericranium
2 parts of the skull
- neurocranium
- Splanchnocranium or facial skeleton
neurocranium bones
- Contains the nervous system
- Consists of 8 bones
4 odd: - occipital
- sphenoid
- ethmoid
- frontal
2 pairs: - parietal
- temporal
splanchnocranium (facial skeleton) bones
- 14 bones
2 odd: - vomer
- mandible
Pairs: - maxilla bone
- palatine bone
- cheekbone
- nasal
- uguis
- inferior nasal concha
Parietal bone
- An even bone
- Curved like a concave tile towards the inside of the skull
- They form the side walls and roof of the cranial vault and articulate with each other in the midline in the sagittal suture
- Articulate with occipital bone in the lambdoid suture
Temporal bone
Parts:
* Scaly portion: it is the most flattened part of the bone
* Mastoid region: posterior portion
* Boulder or petrous portion
Vomer bone
- lower and posterior part of the nasal septum
Mandible
Ramus
- projections (1 on each side) that are directed upwards from the back body - 2 processes:
- Angle
- Condylar process - articulates with the temporal bone
Maxilla bone
- upper jaw
Palatine bone
- forms back of the hard palate, the floor and side walls of the nostrils
Zygomatic
- cheekbone
Nasal
they form the upper part of the nasal bridge
Coronal suture
- parietal part - parietal lobe/bone area
- right and left side
Sagittal suture
Squamous Suture
- temporal part
Sphenosquamos suture
- sphenoidal part
- sphenoid bone area
