Topic 0: intro to anatomy Flashcards
planes in the body:
- saggital plane: divides the body into left and right sections. Median (equal sections)
- coronal plane: divides the body into front or back sections
- transverse plane: divides the body into upper and lower sections
side to side movements:
abduction:
further away from the middle of body (more lateral)
side to side movements:
adduction
more medial - moving towards the midline of your body
ex. bringing your legs together while standing)
Forward and backward Movements
flexion
decreasing the angle at a joint (ex. bicep curl)
Forward and backward Movements
extension
increasing the angle at a joint (ex. straightening your leg at knee)
up and down movements
elevation
raising a body part vertically (Shrugging your shoulders)
up and down movements
depression
lowering a body part vertically ex. opening your jaw
up and down movements:
rotation (internal/external)
spinning around a fixed axis (looking right or left)
up and down movements:
circumduction
moving a limb in a circle
ex. arm circles
up and down movements:
pronation
palms down or 3 axis movement of ankle - eversion, dorsiflexion, abduction
up and down movements:
supination
palms up or 3 axis movement of ankle
up and down movements:
dorsiflexion
raising your toes
up and down movements:
plantar flexion
pointing your toes
up and down movements:
eversion
outward turn of ankle
up and down movements:
inversion
inward turn of ankle
joint vocab
concave
curves inward
joint vocab
convex
curves outwards
ex. a mountain
origin or head:
muscle termination attached to the stationary bone
insertion (distal insertion)
muscle termination attached to the bone with greater movement
belly:
widest portion between origin and insertion
action
main movements that occur when a muscle contracts
