What is Demography?
The study of populations and their charcateristics, e.g. it’s size, the amount of births or the amount of deaths

What was the main reason for population growth before 1980?
Natural Change (more births than deaths)

What was the main reason for population growth after 1980?
Net migration (more immigration than emigration)

What do you measure to find the fertility rate?
The average number of children a woman will have in her fertile years.
Why has the fertility rate decreased?
-Less women are having children (less stigma)
-Women are postponing having children to a later age
What are some reasons for the decline in Birth Rate?
-Change in women’s position
-Decline in the infant mortality rate
-Children are now an economic liablility
-Increased child centeredness
What are some effects of changes in fertility?
-People now have smaller families
-There is a smaller ‘burden of dependency’ (dependency ratio)
-Vanishing children (more only childs)
-An ageing population
