Topic 1b - energy resources (4. biofuels and non renewables) Flashcards
what are bio fuels
renewable energy resources created from plant products or animal dung. burnt to produce electricity or to run cars
advantages of bio fuels
reliable as crops take a short time to grow, when energy is in demand biofuels can be continuously stored and when needed they are there.
disadvantages of biofuels
expensive, take up a lot of space
what is carbon neutral
biofuels that are made from plants are carbon neutral, the plants that grow to produce the waste absorb the co2 from the atmosphere, so when the waste is burned the co2 is re released into the atmosphere so it has a neutral effect.
what are fossil fuels
most of the electricity we use is generated from fossil fuels.
advantages of fossil fuels
reliable, cost effective energy, enough fuel to meet current demand
disadvantages to fossil fuel
big impact on environment, will eventually run out
what are nuclear fuels
Nuclear fission of the nuclear fuels such as uranium and plutonium releases the energy to heat water into steam which drives turbines.
Advantages of nuclear fuel
nuclear power is clean, doesn’t release any harmful gases or chemicals into the atmosphere, reliable
