Topic 1a - energy transfers (1. energy stores and transfers) Flashcards
define kinetic energy
anything moving has energy in its kinetic energy store
define thermal energy
any object. The hotter it is, the more energy it has in its thermal energy store. also called internal energy store.
define chemical energy store
anything that can release energy by a chemical reaction e.g. foods and fuels
define gravitational potential energy
anything that has been lifted above the earth with a mass.
define electro static energy
anything with an electric charge that is interacting with another electric charge .e.g. two charges that attract or repel
define magnetic store
anything magnetic that is reacting with another magnet
define elastic potential
anything that can be stretched or compressed
define nuclear energy
atomic nuclei have energy in this store that can be released in nuclear reactions.
what is a system
another word for a single object or a group of objects.
what is a closed system
where neither matter nor energy can leave. the net change in the total energy of a closed system is always 0.
what are the 4 types of energy transfers
mechanically
electrically
by heating
by radiation
define transferring energy mechanically
an object moving due to a force acting on it e.g. pushing pulling stretching squashing
define transferring energy electrically
a charge moving through a potential difference
define transferring energy by heating
energy transferred from a hotter object to a cooler one
define transferring energy by radiation
energy transferred by light sound waves
