Topic 1b - energy resources (3. hydroelectricity, waves tides) Flashcards
what are hydroelectric power stations
generating electricity using hydroelectric power stations usually requires the flooding of a valley by building a big dam.
kinetic energy store of falling water.
advantages of hydroelectric power station
no pollution, can provide an immediate response to an increased demand for electricity, no problem of reliability except when there is a drought, initial costs are high but no fuel costs and ,animal running costs
disadvantages of hydroelctric
although there is no pollution, the flooding leads to rotting of vegetation and possible loss of habitat
what is wave power
to generate electricity using water waves. need loads of small wave-powered turbines located around the coast. As waves come in it provides an up and down motion which can be used to drive a generator.
advantages of wave power
no pollution, initial costs are high but no fuel costs and minimal running costs
disadvantages of wave power
disturbing marine habitats, hazard to boats, unreliable as waves tend to die out
what are tidal barrages
tidal barrages are big dams with turbines in them. as the tide comes in it fills up the estuaries. the water is then allowed out at a controlled speed.
advantages of tidal barrages
no pollution, reliable
disadvantages of tidal barrages
initial costs are high, free access of boats, depending on the tide height thats how much electricity is produced
