Topography of the medial and lateral malleolar regions
Medial Malleolar Region
- The distal end of the tibia forms the medial malleolus. It is the bony prominence on the inner aspect of the ankle.
ligaments of medial malleolar regions
Ligaments:
Deltoid Ligament: A strong, broad ligament connecting the medial malleolus to the talus, calcaneus, and navicular bones. It consists of superficial and deep layers.
Superficial Layer: Includes the tibionavicular, tibiocalcaneal, and posterior tibiotalar ligaments.
Deep Layer: Includes the anterior tibiotalar ligament.
passes ant to medial malleolar
Saphenous Nerve: Provides sensory innervation to the medial aspect of the leg and foot.
Great Saphenous Vein: Runs anterior to the medial malleolus and is commonly used for venous access.

from anterior to posterior
*Tibialis Posterior Tendon: Supports the arch of the foot.
*Flexor Digitorum Longus Tendon: Flexes the toes.
*Posterior Tibial Artery: Supplies blood to the posterior compartment of the leg and foot.
*Posterior Tibial Vein: Accompanies the posterior tibial artery.
*Tibial Nerve: Provides motor and sensory innervation to the posterior compartment of the leg and the plantar surface of the foot.
*Flexor Hallucis Longus Tendon: Flexes the big toe.
what is lateral malleolar region?
Lateral Malleolus: The distal end of the fibula forms the lateral malleolus. It is the bony prominence on the outer aspect of the ankle
ligaments of lateral
Ligaments:
Anterior Talofibular Ligament (ATFL): Connects the lateral malleolus to the talus.
Calcaneofibular Ligament (CFL): Connects the lateral malleolus to the calcaneus.
Posterior Talofibular Ligament (PTFL): Connects the lateral malleolus to the talus.

Superficial Peroneal (Fibular) Nerve: Provides sensory innervation to the dorsum of the foot and motor innervation to the peroneal muscles.
Small Saphenous Vein: Runs posterior to the lateral malleolus.
post to lat. m.
Peroneus (Fibularis) Longus Tendon: Everts and plantarflexes the foot.
Peroneus (Fibularis) Brevis Tendon: Everts the foot.
