muscles of hip supra- and infrapiriformis hiatus
muscles groups of hip
2 groups :
I.Inner (4):
1.Psoasmajor
2.psoas minor
3.iliacus
4.piriformis
5.obturtaor internus
II.Outer (8):
1.Gluteus maximus
2.gluteus medius
3.gluteus minimus
4.tensor fascia latae
5.superior gemellus
6.inferior gemellus
7.quadratus femoris
8.obturator externus
flexion participating muscles
8
Flexion: Moving the thigh forward
Primary Muscles Involved:
Iliopsoas (Iliacus and Psoas Major)
Rectus Femoris (part of the quadriceps group)
Sartorius
Tensor Fasciae Latae
Pectineus
Adductor Longus
Adductor Brevis
Adductor Magnus (anterior part)
Suprapiriform hiatus = greater sciatic foramen
-Borders:
Superior – anterior sacroiliac ligament
Posteromedial – sacrotuberous ligament
Anterolateral – greater sciatic notch of the ilium
Inferior – sacrospinous ligament and ischial spine
contents:
Superior gluteal artery (from internal iliac a.) and vein
Superior gluteal nerve-supplies pirirformis and obturator internus (AVN)
infrapiriformis = lesser sciatic notch
contents : Superior – sacrospinous ligament and ischial spine
Anterior – ischial spine, lesser sciatic notch and ischial tuberosity
Posterior – sacrotuberous ligament
contents :
-Internal pudendal artery and vein
-Pudendal nerve (note the pudendal nerve first leaves the pelvis via the greater sciatic foramen, and then re-enters via the lesser sciatic foramen)
-Obturator internus tendon
-Nerve to obturator internus
extension
Extension: Moving the thigh backward
Primary Muscles Involved:
Gluteus Maximus
Hamstrings (Biceps Femoris, Semitendinosus, Semimembranosus)
Adductor Magnus (posterior part)
abduction
Abduction: Moving the thigh away from the midline
Primary Muscles Involved:
Gluteus Medius
Gluteus Minimus
Tensor Fasciae Latae
Sartorius
adduction
Adduction: Moving the thigh toward the midline
Primary Muscles Involved:
Adductor Longus
Adductor Brevis
Adductor Magnus
Pectineus
Gracilis
internal/medial rotation
Internal (Medial) Rotation: Rotating the thigh inward
Primary Muscles Involved:
Gluteus Medius (anterior fibers)
Gluteus Minimus
Tensor Fasciae Latae
Adductor Longus
Adductor Brevis
Pectineus
external/lateral rotation
External (Lateral) Rotation: Rotating the thigh outward
Primary Muscles Involved:
