Nerves of the lumbar plexus
1.Iliohypogastric & 2.ilioinguinal: L1
3.Genitofemoral nerve- l1 & l2
4.Lateral femoral cutaneous -L2 & L3
5.Obturator nerve - L2 to L4
same for 6.Femoral nerve
mnemonic: I twice Get Laid On Fridays/ 2-1, 2-2, 2-3
coursing of nerve of lumbar plexus
-Iliohypogastric: introlaterally towards ant aspect of iliac crest
-Ilioinguinal : inferior to iliohypogastric, at level of iliac crest, lies medial to iliohypogastric
-Genitofemoral: pierces psoas major, continues downward & medially to inguinal and femoral canal
-Lateral f.c : interolateral side of iliac fossa & passes in deep lateral portion of inguinal lig.
-Obturator: along post. pelvic cavity , travels through through obturator formane where it splits
-Femoral : lat. part of inguinal lig and enters femoral canal lat. to all femoral vessels (N,A,V)
muscles and areas supplied by nerve of lumbar plexus
1.internal oblique and transversus abdominis and then divides into two cutaneous terminal branches: a lateral branch -small area of the upper lateral buttock & anterior branch- small skin area above the pubis
2 : transervessus abdmoninis muscle & internal oblique muscle
3.Genital branch:In males-lateral scrotal skin and cremaster muscle & in females-mons pubis, labia majora/ Femoral branch : skin overlying femoral triangle
4.Skin of lat. part of thigh to knee & perineum of iliac fascia
5.Post.branch: Obturator externus & adductor magnus / Anterior branch: adductor longus, brevis, gracilis & pectineus
6.muscular branch: Iliopsoas, pectineus, sartorius & quadriceps femoris/ ant.cutaneous branch: skin of anteromedial thigh /saphenous nerve :skin of the medial knee, leg, and foot
