Topic 10.1 Flashcards
What is recombination
a process by which pieces of DNA are broken and recombined to produce new combinations of alleles in haploid cells & thus increases the genetic diversity of potential offspring
What is a result of recombination?
alleles are swapped between non-sister chromatids
How are chromosomes connected during synapsis?
by a protein-RNA complex called the synaptonemal complex
What does the chiasma do?
hold the homologous chromosomes together as a bivalent until anaphase I
Chiasmata formation between non-sister chromatids can result in the exchange of alleles
When are chiasma formed?
in prophase 1
What are recombinant chromosomes?
These chromosomes that consist of genetic material from both homologues
