Topic 1: The Cell Flashcards
What is a cell? (2)
The cell is the basic unit of life and is the basic structure of all living things.
What are the characteristics of a living thing? (5)
- Ability to reproduce
- Breathing
- Growing
- Eliminating waste
- Nourishing themselves
What is the function of the nucleolus? (3)
No membrane - not an organelle. It’s within the nucleus. It’s where the DNA can be found.
What are the functions of lysosomes? (2)
Lysosomes digest nutrients. Decomposition.
What is the function of ribosomes? (1)
Ribosomes produce proteins.
What are the functions of the Golgi apparatus (body)? (2)
The Golgi apparatus stores material produced by the cell. It also transports materials.
What are the functions of centrioles? (2)
Centrioles help in cell division. It’s in the shape of a tube.
What are the functions of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (smooth ER)? (3)
The smooth endoplasmic reticulum produces lipids (fats), it transports and detoxifies.
What is the function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum (rough ER)? (1)
The rough endoplasmic reticulum produces protein ingredients for transport out of the cell.
What are the functions of the cell membrane? (3)
The cell membrane is a barrier that protects the cell, it absorbs nutrients and evacuates waste.
What is the function of mitochondria? (1)
Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell. They produce energy through cellular respiration.
What is the function of the cytoplasm? (1)
The cytoplasm provides a good environment for cell organelles.
What are the functions of the nucleus? (2)
The nucleus contains cell information. The nucleus also protects the DNA. It’s in charge of the whole cell.
