Meiosis Flashcards
Meiosis creates…
It creates haploid cells that are used for sexual reproduction (sex cells).
What does haploid mean?
It means that the cell only contains one copy of each gene.
What does diploid mean?
Diploid means that the cell has 2 copies of each gene.
Give 2 different names for male sex cells.
Spermatozoa and male gametes
How long do male sex cells last outside the body?
5 days
Give 3 different names for female sex cells.
Ova/ovum, eggs or female gametes
What are the 4 phases of meiosis 1?
- Prophase 1
- Metaphase 1
- Anaphase 1
- Telophase 1
What are the 4 phases of meiosis 2?
- Prophase 2
- Metaphase 2
- Anaphase 2
- Telophase 2
What happens in prophase 1? (3)
- The DNA condenses (same)
- The nuclear membrane disappears (same)
- “Crossing over” (different)
What happens in metaphase 1? (2)
- Pairs of chromosomes line up (different)
- They align (same)
What happens in anaphase 1? (1)
- Chromosome pairs separate, “back away” (same)
What happens in telophase 1? (2)
- A new nuclear membrane appears (same)
- The DNA condenses again (same)
What happens in prophase 2? (2)
- The DNA condenses (same)
- The nuclear membrane disappears (same)
What happens in metaphase 2? (1)
- Single chromosomes line up in the middle (same but different from metaphase 2)
What happens in anaphase 2? (1)
- Chromosome pairs separate, “back away” (same)
- They are now chromatids (different)
