Topic 1 - Plant Cell Orgnalles Flashcards
Vacuole
This is any fluid filled space in the cell with a membrane. is permanent in plant cells and it’s filled with cell sap
Important in keeping osmosis in the cell and keeping the cell turgid so the plant remains upright
Used as a storage vessel
chloroplast
Hello plant cells to make their own food by carrying out photosynthesis
Large contains DNA surrounded by an outer membrane inner membrane is folded they also contain chlorophyll traps the suns energy and ribosomes
Amyloplasts
Also known as Starch grain
these are organelles that are used to store Amylopectin a form of starch
Cell wall
Gives the cell shape and support
Made up of starch called Cellulose
Cellulose forms long straight chains rather than spirals like amylose
Cellulose forms microfibrils held together by glue like carbohydrates
This makes material of the cell wall which is flexible
When the cell is turgid it supports the wall making the plant stand upright
When cells are flaccid the plant wilts
Plasmodermata
Small gaps between cells which they can communicate
They are threads of cytoplasm that connect the cells to each other passing signalling substances between them
Interconnected cytoplasm is called symplast
