Topic 1 - Cells Flashcards
What cells include animal and plant cells?
Eukaryotic cells
What cells include bacteria cells?
Prokaryotic cells
A prokaryote is a __
prokaryotic cell (single-celled organism)
A eukaryote is made up of…?
Eukaryotic cells
What are the different parts of the cell called?
Subcellular structures
Animal cells contain what subcellular structures?
Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Cell membrane, Mitochondira, Ribosomes.
Purpose of the Nucleus?
Contains genetic material that controls the activities of the cell.
Purpose of cytoplasm?
Where chemical reactions happen. Contains enzymes that control these reactions.
Purpose of Cell membrane?
Holds cell together, controls what goes in and out.
Purpose of Mitochondria?
Where reactions for aerobic respiration happen. Respiration transfers energy the cell needs to work.
Purpose of Ribosomes?
Where proteins are made.
What extra parts do plant cells have from animal cells?
Cell wall, Permanent vacuole, Chloroplasts.
Purpose of Cell wall?
Made of cellulose. Supports cell and strengthens it.
What is Permanent vacuole made of?
Contains cell sap.
Bacteria cell contains what subcellular structures?
Cytoplasm, Cell membrane, Cell wall, [Single circular strand of DNA] that floats freely in cytoplasm, may contain [plasmids].
