More on Enzymes and Digestion Flashcards
1
Q
How are enzymes used in the digestive system produced?
A
- By specialised cells in glands and in the gut lining. 2. Different enzymes catalyse the breakdown of different food molecules.
2
Q
Salivary glands
A
Produce amylase enzyme in the saliva.
3
Q
Stomach
A
- It pummels the food with its muscular walls. 2. It produces the protease enzyme, pepsin. 3. It produces hydrochloric acid to a) Kill bacteria b) Give the right pH for the protease enzyme to work (pH 2 - acidic).
4
Q
Liver
A
Where bile is produced. Bile neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fats.
5
Q
Gall bladder
A
Where bile is stored before it’s released into the small intestine.
6
Q
Pancreas
A
Produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes. It releases these into the small intestine.
7
Q
Large intestine
A
Where excess water is absorbed from the food.
8
Q
Small intestine
A
- Produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes to complete digestion. 2. Also where the digested food is absorbed out of the digestive system into the blood.
9
Q
Rectum
A
Where the faeces are stored before they come out through the anus.
