The Lungs - Learn diagram of lungs Flashcards
1
Q
You need to get oxygen into your bloodstream to supply your cells for_?
A
respiration.
2
Q
Where are the lungs?
A
In the Thorax.
3
Q
What is the thorax and where is it?
A
It is is the top part of your body. It is separated from the lower part of the body by the diaphragm.
4
Q
What are some mechanisms of the lungs?
A
- They are like big sponges and are protected by the ribcage. 2. They’re surrounded by the pleural membranes. 3. The air you breathe in goes through the trachea. This splits into two tubes called bronchi (each one is a bronchus), one going to each lung. 4. The bronchi split into progressively smaller tubes called bronchioles. 5. The bronchioles end at small bags called alveoli where the gas exchange takes place.
5
Q
Where does gas exchange occur in the body?
A
The Alveoli.
6
Q
The lungs contain millions and millions of little air sacs called_, surrounded by a_? This is where gas exchange happens.
A
alveoli, network of blood capillaries.
7
Q
How does the gas exchange happen in the alveoli?
A
- The blood passing next to the alveoli has just returned to the lungs from the rest of the body, so it contains lots of carbon dioxide and very little oxygen. 2. Oxygen diffuses out of the alveolus (high concentration) into the blood (low concentration). 3. Carbon dioxide diffuses out of the blood (high concentration) into the alveolus (low concentration) to be breathed out. 4. When the blood reaches body cells oxygen is released from the red blood cells (where there’s a high concentration) and diffuses into the body cells (where there’s a low concentration. 5. At the same time, carbon dioxide diffuses out of the body cells (where there’s a high concentration) into the blood (where there’s a low concentration). It’s then carried back to the lungs.
