Diffusion Flashcards
What does diffusion mean?
The spreading out of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
Where does diffusion happen and how?
In solutions and gases - because the particles in these substances are free to move about randomly.
The bigger the concentration gradient (the difference in concentration) the_?
faster the diffusion rate.
What will give a faster diffusion rate apart from a bigger concentration gradient?
A higher temperature because the particles have more energy, so they move around faster.
What holds the cell together but lets stuff in and out as well?
Cell membranes.
By which process can dissolved substances move in and out of cells?
Diffusion.
What type of molecules can diffuse through cell membranes?
Small molecules, like oxygen, glucose, amino acids and water. Big molecules like starch and proteins can’t fit through.
How do particles flow through the cell membrane?
Through diffusion, from where there’s a higher concentration to where there’s a lower concentration.
What happens if there are a lot more particles on one side of the membrane?
There’s a net (overall) movement from that side.
What happens to the diffusion rate, the larger the surface area of the membrane?
The faster the diffusion rate.
