Topic 1: Biological Diversity and Survival Flashcards
1
Q
Variation
A
- Differences in characteristics of organisms based on genetics and environmental factors
2
Q
Biological Diversity
A
- The number and variety of organisms in an area
3
Q
Why is Biological Diversity Important?
A
- Biological Diversity is essential for a species survival
- Biological Diversity allows many cures for different types of diseases
- Biological Diversity increase food production
4
Q
Why Should Biological Diversity be Preserved?
A
- So food chains are not affected
- So the population of other species don’t increase or decrease
5
Q
Species
A
- A group of organisms that share the same characteristics
- These groups will usually interbreed in nature and will produce fertile offsprings
6
Q
Variation Within Species
A
- The differences between organisms of the same species
Ex. How a human differs from another human
7
Q
Variation Among Species
A
- The differences between organisms of different species
Ex. How a human differs from a horse
8
Q
Speciation
A
- The process in which organisms of the same species are put into different environments and develop different characteristics
Ex. Finch birds
9
Q
Structural Adaptation
A
- An inherited physical adaptation that helps an organism survive in its environment
Ex. feathers, fur, beaks
10
Q
Behavioral Adaptation
A
An inherited behavior that allows an organism to survive in its environment
Ex. migration of birds, hibernation, bird warning calls
11
Q
Diversity Index
A
- A measurement that shows biological diversity in a numerical way
- Compares the diversity of a species in the area with the total number of organisms in the same area
12
Q
Extra
A
- If an ecosystem faces a dramatic change (climate, pollution, etc.) a species with no diversity will become extinct because every organism is the same
- Although Black Death wiped out most of the population, some people were able to survive because of biological diversity
- Diversity will occur more in tropical areas because the temperature stays the same for most of the year.
