Passing It On Flashcards
1
Q
Heritable
A
- Traits that are able to be passed on to an offspring
2
Q
Asexual Reproduction
A
- The formation of an organism from a single organism
- The genetic material and inherited characteristics will be identical to the parent
3
Q
Advantages to Asexual Reproduction
A
- There is no need to find a mate
- It is much faster then sexual reproduction
4
Q
Disadvantages to Asexual Reproduction
A
- If the environment changes, the whole population could be wiped out as the organisms are all the same
5
Q
Types of Asexual Reproduction
A
- Binary Fission
- Asexual Spores
- Asexual Reproduction in Plants
- Budding
6
Q
Binary Fission
A
- Splitting of a single cell organism into two new identical organisms
- New cells are called “daughter cells”
Ex. bacteria, amoeba
7
Q
Asexual Spores
A
- Organism will form single celled reproductive structures called spores
- Only one parent organism supplies the genetic material
Ex. mushrooms - Some organism create zoospores which have tails to swim in the water
Ex. green algae
8
Q
Asexual Reproduction in Plants
A
- Plants can reproduce in the meristem
- If the meristem of the plant is cut of and planted it will form an plant that is the exact copy of the parent plant
Ex. potato, spider plant
9
Q
Budding
A
- Organism produces a new group of cells called a bud
- When the bud is developed it will detach itself and become an independent organism
Ex. sea sponges, hydra
10
Q
Bacterial Conjuction
A
- Form of sexual reproduction
- Cells do not reproduce but just combine
11
Q
Zygote
A
- First cell of a growing organism
- Contains genetic material from both parents
- Single celled
12
Q
Pistil
A
- Female reproductive organ
13
Q
Stamen
A
- Male reproductive organ
14
Q
Ovule
A
- Where egg is fertilized
15
Q
Embyro
A
- Mulitcelluar organism
