(COPD) Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a
common lung disease that makes it difficult to breathe. It’s caused by several factors that obstruct airflow in the lungs, including:
Damaged or inflamed airways
Air sacs that lose their ability to stretch and shrink
Increased mucus production
Clogged airways
COPD is a leading cause of death in the United States.
Symptoms
Breathing
Shortness of breath, especially during physical activity, and trouble catching your breath
Coughing
Ongoing cough, sometimes with phlegm that may be clear, white, yellow, or greenish
Other
Wheezing, fatigue, chest tightness, frequent respiratory infections, unexplained weight loss, and swelling in the ankles, feet, or legs
Smoking is the leading cause of COPD, but it can also be caused by air pollution. Nonsmokers can also develop COPD.
