TOP COMMON DRUGS for Anemia Flashcards
Anemia is
a blood disorder that occurs when your body doesn’t have enough red blood cells or hemoglobin to carry oxygen throughout your body:
Symptoms
Symptoms include weakness, fatigue, dizziness, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, headaches, and pale or yellow skin.
Causes
Anemia can be caused by;
Diet: A lack of iron, vitamin B-12, or folate can increase the risk of anemia.
Menstrual periods: Heavy menstrual periods can cause anemia because they lead to a loss of red blood cells.
Pregnancy: Pregnant people who don’t take a multivitamin with iron and folic acid are at an increased risk of anemia.
Chronic conditions: Cancer, kidney failure, and diabetes can increase the risk of anemia.
Family history: Inherited anemias, such as sickle cell anemia, can be passed down through families.
Treatment:
Treatment depends on the cause of the anemia. For example, iron deficiency anemia can often be treated with iron supplements and dietary changes. If the anemia is caused by blood loss, the source of the bleeding needs to be found and stopped.
