Top 5 - Cold Environments Flashcards
Describe the climate of cold environments.
Temps never normally exceed 10C
Winters are normally below -40C, can reach -90*C
Rainfall and snow is no more than 100mm in polar and around 380mm in tundra (trees)
Give two differences between the polar and tundra environments within cold environments.
Tundra is home to a lot of people / workers
Polar environments are almost uninhabited
Give two adaptations of animals for cold environments
Good insulation - lots of fur on polar bear
Camouflage - white blend in with snow harder for prey to be seen
Give two adaptations of plants for cold environments
Small and round shaped - provide protection from wind
Most have shallow roots - layer of permafrost beneath soil / snow
Describe one issue related to biodiversity in cold environments.
They have a very low biodiversity - if one species changes it will affect the dependant species dramatically.
