Top 4 - The Challenge of Resource Management WATER + ENERGY Flashcards
Give a definition of water security.
Water security is making sure the country has enough water to go around and that the country does not struggle with physical water deficit or economical water deficit.
Describe the global pattern of water insecurity.
The country that have the worse water deficit are the same ones that have a physical water deficit because they are in a hot place such as the equator.
Give three human factors that can lead to water insecurity.
- Pollution
- Over-abstrction (more used that replaced)
- Limited infrastructure (e.g rapid urbanisation)
What is desalination?
Desalination is the process of remove the salt from within the water so it is consumable.
Describe two methods of desalination.
- It can be heated therefore evaporating the water away from the salt.
- It can be fed through a special membrane which water can travel through but not salt.
Define grey water.
It is the cleanish product of our bathroom and kitchen appliances like dishwasher water and bath or shower water.
Give an example of a large scale water transfer scheme.
The Chinese south to north pipeline to transfer 44.8 billion litres from south to north.
Define energy security.
Energy security is having a high reliable amount of affordable energy ready for user consumption.
Give two physical factors that affect energy security.
Physical - Fossil fuels are non-renewable, there is also an unequal distribution of natural fossil fuels.
What does sustainable use of energy mean?
Sustainable energy provides energy today without preventing future generations from meeting their energy needs.
What does a person carbon footprint measure?
A carbon footprint is a measure of the amount of greenhouse gases (CO2 and Methane) an individuals activities produce.
Define fracking.
The pumping of liquid into a shale rock to crack it open and extracting the shale gas.
Give a named example of local renewable energy scheme
Rice Husks are used to generate sustainable power in Bihar.
