Top 4 - The Challenge of Resource Managment FOOD Flashcards
Give the definition of water security
If a country is water secure then they have an abundance of water AKA; enough to do everything that they need like domestic use and agricultural uses as well.
How might a lack of access to water affect the economic development of a country?
It will largely affect the agricultural side of the country because agriculture uses roughly 80% of a country’s water and if farming can’t take place then the economy will crumble.
Which category of country consumes the most resources?
HIC because they can afford to buy the resources they need and expect a higher standard of living.
How has demand for seasonal food changed in the UK?
It has changed and it has changed because people want seasonal food all year which is making it a lot harder for farmers who struggle to grow this type of crop.
Give three ways that farming in the UK has changed
Farm sizes are increased
The amount of chemicals used in food production has increased
The number of workers employed has fallen due to more use of machinery
Give one solution to the problems of water deficit
Balancing supply and demand my put water meters on homes and at farms.
Give two physical factors that affect the availability of food.
One physical factor would be the climate and some countries are unable to Mae produce due to the climate.
Another could be water deficit and if not enough water nothing can grow.
List 5 impacts of food insecurity
Famine Undernutrition Soil erosion Rising prices Social unrest
What is hydroponics?
Hydroponics is a way to grow produce/food without the use of soil, rather they are gown in a nutrient solution.
Describe three methods of sustainable farming
Organic farming - farming but without the chemicals
Permaculture - A gentle version of farming for example you would try to produce food in a way that recreates the natural ecosystem in an effort to protect the soil
Urban farming initiatives - Farming everywhere possible.
