Top 1 - Natural Hazards Flashcards
What is a natural hazard?
A natural hazard is a natural process which could cause death, injury or disruption to humans or destroy property and possessions.
Give three factors affecting hazard risk.
The more people in the area exposed to the natural hazard the more likely it is that they will be affected.
The better a population can cope with the hazard the lower the threat.
The hazard of some natural hazards pose a greater threat than other due to the nature of the hazard.
What is a destructive plate boundary?
Destructive is where two plates converge on each other and one ends up going unearth the other one, Oceanic goes under Continental.
Name two more plate boundaries not incl. destructive.
Conservative - Side to Side
Constructive - Away from each other
Why do volcanoes form at destructive plate boundaries?
Because when the oceanic plate is force down into the mantle and destroyed that creates pools of magma and that magma rises through the cracks in the crust called vents then erupts onto surface where it is called lava.
At which types of boundaries can earthquakes occur?
All three because at all three tension builds up.
Give two primary and two secondary effect of a volcanic eruption.
Buildings Collapse, Airports damaged / destroyed
Creates tidal surge, landslides
What are the pull factors of living in areas prone to hazards?
There is employment in the area.
Confident of support from their government
Soil around volcanoes is fertile (very good for farming)
Volcanoes are tourist attractions
Describe the distribution of tropical storms.
Most tropical storms occur 5* to 30* north and south of the equator.
What conditions are required for a tropical storm to develop?
Sea temp should be 27* or higher and when the difference in windspeed between higher and lower parts of the atmosphere is low.
How might climate change affect tropical storms?
Global temps are expected to rise as a result of climate change this means that more of the worlds oceans could experience tropical storms
Oceans will stay above 27* for longer means more of them can occur
Higher temps - storms could be stronger - more destruction.
Give three primary and three secondary effects of tropical storms.
Building collapse, bridges collapse, airports destroyed
People left homeless, poverty, death (lack of shelter)
List the types of extreme weather that can occur in the UK.
Rain, Wind, Snow and Ice, Thunderstorms, Hailstorms, HeatWaves, Drought
Give one piece of evidence that the weather in the UK is more extreme.
Temps are getting more extreme - December 2010 was the coldest for over 100 years, April 2011 was the warmest April on record.
What is the quaternary period?
The Quaternary Period is the most recent geological time period, spanning from about 2.6mil years ago to the present day.
