Tooth Morphology (TM) Intro: Teeth composition and classification Flashcards
What is the Universal Numbering system?
What is the Palmer Notation system?
Terminology used to describe the parts of a tooth
What is a cusp?
an elevation or bulge on the crown portion
What is the following feature?
Tubercle: –a smaller elevation on some portion of the crown produced by an extra formation of enamel
What is the following feature?
Groove: –Developmental groove, supplemental grooves
What is the following feature?
–Fossa:–An irregular depression or concavity
What is the following feature?
Pit –A small pinpoint depressions
What are the 5 surfaces/views of a tooth?
Why are arbitrary division into thirds are given to a tooth? Label what these divisions for an anterior teeth (labial and proximal view) and posterior teeth (buccal & proximal view)
For purposes of description, the crowns and roots of teeth have been divided into thirds, and junctions of the crown surfaces are described as line angles and point angles.
What are line angles? Label the line angles for a posterior tooth.
A line angle is formed by the junction of two surfaces and derives its name from the combination of the two surfaces that join.
What are point angles? Label the line angles for a posterior tooth. Give an example using an anterior tooth.
A point angle is formed by the junction of three surfaces. The point angle also derives its name from the combination of the names of the surfaces forming it. For example, the junction of the mesial, buccal, and occlusal surfaces of a molar is called the mesiobucco-occlusal point angle.
What tooth ID system do we use in Australia/NZ?
FDI
Tooth ID= [quadrant number], [tooth number]
For adults quadrant # is 1,2,3,4
For kids the quadrant # is 5,6,7,8
What’s a proximal surface?
The mesial or distal surface of the tooth
