Caries Prevention Flashcards
What did Fahr et al 1970 est?
Conc: stop brushing < sucrose rinse= more caries. But lesions reversible if resuming OH and F.
What did Munksgaard 1994 discover?
Ortho band left on for 4 weeks developed plaque. Toothbrush to area reversed lesions.
Conc: need meticulous OH
What are 6 factors in brushing technique is best?
soft, horizontal, 45 degree angle, small, continuous, margins
What is the best technique for brushing teeth?
show them angle towards gums (1 side bristle towards gums)
- 3mm space is clean
- both sides of tooth esp lingual.
What sequence of brushing teeth should I show patients?
45 degree angle, to and fro, amplitude= shorter
What is the toothpick method?
est. in Japan.
30 degree angle from gum line, bristles go in between teeth, acts like floss.
What interdental cleaning suggestions can be given to patient?
super floss is for bridge, esp under PONTIC.
4 step advice for patient
- Brush twice (atleast night time)
- Fluoride
- AVoid rinse
- Brush after breakfast and last thing.
What should you advise 3yr old with lots of cavities?
can advise adult tp
What are the fluoride levels in tp suggested?
don’t give kids 0-18 months (1.5yrs) fluoride.
abt 18m-6 yo= lesser conc
6-adult= higher conc
When should you prescribe Chlorhexidine?
used for plaque control
Alice Horowitz et al (1980) found:
you can have really good Oh and use non Fluoride tp but still wont lower risk of decay.
What studies in children showed lowered risk of caries?
- Wright= Preschool kids 50% less likely to get decay bc their hygienist flossed
- Bellini = brushed with Na F
- Prof Evans= non fluoride didnt do anything
When can you use resin infiltration?
C1-C2, lesion just into Dentine.
What is arginine?
advertised as ‘antisensitive’ but it actually neutralises acid plaque and protects the enamel.
