ToolingU_Chapter 4 Vocab Flashcards
A substance that has been intentionally added to a metal to improve its properties. This often improves machinability
Additives
An organization that issues general classification standards for iron and steel. They are responsible for assigning machinability ratings to a wide variety of materials.
American Iron and Steel Institute
What does AISI stand for?
American Iron and Steel Institute
What is B-1112 steel?
A particular grade of steel that acts as the standard for machinability ratings. B-1112 steel has a 1.00 machinability rating.
What does concentric mean?
of or denoting circles, arcs, or other shapes that share the same center, the larger often completely surrounding the smaller.
having a common center. concentric circles. having a common axis
A white, brittle metal with a pinkish tinge. This may be added to steel to improve machinability
Bismuth
The main hardening element in steel.
Carbon
The heating of metal within a carbon-rich environment increases carbon levels on the metal surface. This creates a hardened exterior shell.
Case Hardening
An imaginary line that runs through the center of a cylindrical workpiece and around which the workpiece rotates. These are 90 degrees angle to a lather headstock
Centerline
The shaping of metal at temperatures much lower than the metal’s molten state. This is done a room temperature.
Cold Working
What does Cycle Time tell you?
The time it takes to perform a single task. Cycle time may refer to the time it takes to make on part or to perform one step in a process
The distance the cutting tool plunges into the workpiece. This indicates the amount of material being removed by one pass of the cutting tool.
Depth of Cut
What does Ductility/Ductile mean?
A material’s ability to be drawn, stretched, or formed without breaking. Ductility is more common in softer metals.
A turning operation that removes material from the end of the rotating cylindrical part. These operations which are programmed in sfm, are usually performed to establish a part’s length.
Facing
The rate at which the cutting tool travels along the length of the workpiece. This measures the linear movement.
Feed
What are Free-Machining Steels?
Free-machining steels may include added bismuth or sulfur.
The unit of power used to describe machine strength. More of this allows the spindle to exert a greater amount of force.
Horsepower
A work-holding device with movable jaws that uses pressurized liquid to increase its clamping force and rigidity.
Hydraulic-Operated Chucks
What does rigidity mean?
The inability to be bent or be forced out of shape
What does Ipm stand for?
Inches per minute. The distance in inches that the entire tool advances in one minute.
The measurement of feed on the lathe.
Inches Per Revolution
The measurement of feed of a rotating cutting tool on the lathe
Ipm
What does Ipr stand for?
Inches per revolution. The distance in inches that the tool advances during one complete revolution.
A substance that is unintentionally present in a metal and often has undesirable properties. This is harder than the metal itself and reduces machinability.
