- otitis media
- quinsy
- rheumatic fever and glomerulonephritis

what is the criteria for considering a tonsillectomy?
A
- sore throats are due to tonsillitis
- > /= 5 episodes per year
- occuring for at least a year
- episodes are disabling and prevent normal functioning

what associated complications of tonsillitis are indications of tonsillectomy?
A
- recurrent febrile convulsions
- obstructive sleep apnoea, stridor or dysphagia
- quinsy

<24 hours
* haemorrage (most commonly due to inadequate haemostasis)
* pain
