what is meniere’s disease?
disorder of the inner ear of unknown cause
what are the characteristics of meniere’s disease?
excessive pressure and progressive dilation of the endolymphatic system
what are the features of meniere’s disease?
- recurrent episodes of vertigo, tinnitus and hearing loss
- sensation of aural fullness or pressure
- nystagmus
- +ve romberg test
- typically unilateral
how long do the episodes last in meniere’s disease?
minutes to hours
what type of hearing loss is seen in meniere’s disease?
sensorineural
how long does meniere’s disease last?
5-10 years
how is meniere’s disease diagnosed?
ENT assessment
what driving advise is given to patient’s with meniere’s disease?
inform the DVLA
cease driving until satisfactory control of symptoms
how are acute attacks of meniere’s disease managed?
buccal or IM prochlorperazine
how is meniere’s disease prevented?
- betahistine
- vestibular rehabilitation
