Term: Didactic
Meaning: Designed or intended to teach people something – for instance proper or moral behaviors that they should follow.
Example #1: James was a very didactic person; he really loved teaching.
Example #2: Her “novels for children” are certainly didactic, and they are certainly moral.
Term: Nostalgic
Term: Nostalgic
Meaning: Feeling happy and also slightly sad when you think about things that happened in the past.
Example #1: When the old song came on the radio, Harold suddenly felt nostalgic for his high school years.
Example #2: The scent of hot cocoa made her nostalgic for the sledding parties of her childhood.
Term: Pedantic
Meaning: Is an insulting word used to describe someone who annoys others by correcting small errors, caring too much about minor details, or emphasizing their own expertise especially in some narrow or boring subject matter.
Example #1: Pedantic people are prone to do this with minor typing errors or spelling mistakes.
Example #2: A couple is taking a museum tour when the husband keeps interrupting the guide and giving his own take on the information provided. This is pedantic behavior.
Term: Trite
Meaning: lacking in freshness or effectiveness because of constant use or excessive repetition
Example #1: The Chemistry teacher told his students, “but when using a microscope, there’s more than meets the eye!”
Example #2: No sooner said than done
Term: Contemptuous
Meaning: Manifesting, feeling, or expressing deep hatred or disapproval
Example #1: “You’re Posted!” the Patrolman stated.
Example #2: “Are you, then, a coward?” cried Villefort
Term: Sardonic
Meaning: Dry, understated, and sort of mocking speech or writing
Example #1: A comedian’s sneering jokes about a specific group of people that he wants to criticize.
Example #2: I did not attend the funeral, but I sent a letter saying I approved of it.
Term: Benevolent
Meaning: Having a desire to do good
Example #1: Long Cross Farm is reputedly haunted by a very benevolent spirit.
Example #2: It turns out, however, their motives are not so benevolent.
Term: Effusive
Meaning: marked by the expression of great or excessive emotion or enthusiasm
Example #1: He was effusive in his praise for the general
Example #2: She was very gushing and very effusive.
Term: Compassionate
Meaning: moments when characters show kindness, mercy, and similar qualities.
Example #1: Giving up a seat to a pregnant woman
Example #2: being polite to retail workers
