Term: Logos
Meaning: The appeal to logic or reason.
Example #1: All men are mortal. Socrates is a man. Therefore, Socrates is mortal.
Example #2: The number one leading cause of death in America is heart disease.
Term: Ethos
Meaning: The persuasive appeal of one’s character.
Example #1: As a doctor, I am qualified to tell you that this course of treatment will likely generate the best results.
Example #2: As a dietician, I would recommend the diet that was given to you.
Term: Pathos
Meaning: The appeal to emotion.
Example #1: A teenager tries to convince his parents to buy him a new car by saying if they cared about their child’s safety they’d upgrade him.
Example #2: A man at the car dealership implores the salesman to offer the best price on a new car because he needs to support his young family.
