Titanium Flashcards
physical properties of titanium ?
it is light
can maintain its strength at high temperatures
is highly resistant to corosion
- bio compatible (can enter into the body without rejection
- low density
what are some uses of titanium
- nuclear reactor engines
- exhaust parts for high performance cars
- pipes
- body replacement e.g. hip replacement
why is extracting titanium using carbon ineffective
it forms brittle carbides which make the metal too brittle for use
How would you extract Titanium ?
heat rutile to 1000degrees with chlorine and carbon to get brid of oxygen
TiO2 + 2Cl2 + 2C > TiCl4 + 2CO2
mix TiCl4 with magnesium and heat up to 9000degrees in an helium-argon atmosphere to prevent Titanium from reaction with Oxygen
TiCl4 + 2Mg > Ti + 2MgCl2
-TiCl4 is 99.9% pure and can be used as a catalyst
- TiCl4 can be reacted with Mg to produce pure Titanium for engines, bike frames etc.
- you can ereact TiCl4 with Oxygen to form TiO which is used in paint
