Haber And Contact Process Flashcards
What is the contact process
It uses a heterogeneous catalyst (V2O5) to make sulfuric acid
Contact process steps
Sulphur dioxide heated to 450 degrees and converted to sulphur trioxide
Sulphur trioxide is then converted into concentrated Sulphuric acid
What is the haber process
Uses nitrogen and hydrogen to produce ammonia using a heterogeneous catalyst (iron)
Condotions - 450 degrees 200 atm
Why is using powdered catalyst better
Increased surface area meaning more reactant absorption therefore faster rate of reaction
How does contact process work
Nitrogen and and hydrogen react in a sealed vessel at 200atm and 450 degrees to form ammonia
What are the steps to the haber process
Nitrogen and hydrogen are fed into the reaction vessel at 450 degrees and 200 atm
They will mix to form ammonia however there will still be nitrogen and hydrogen molecules which won’t have reacted
The mixture is passed through a condenser where ammonia condenses and the left over hydrogen and nitrogen molecules are recycled back into the vessel
