tissues/stem Flashcards
tissue
collection of similar cells that perform specific function
organ
structure of diff tissues working together to perform specific body function
four types of tissue
epithelial, connective, muscle, nerve
epithelial (ex, description, function)
ex skin, lining digestive system
- tightly packed cells covering surface and lining internal organs
- protection from dehydration
connective (ex,description, function)
ex bone, blood, tendons
- types of cells and fibres held together by liq/sol/gas, matrix
- support and insulation
muscle (ex, description, function)
ex muscles
- muscle fibres containing specialized proteins that can shorten and contract
- movement
nerve (ex, description, function)
ex brain, nerves in sensory organs
- long thin cells w branches, conduct elec impulses
- communicate w body, sensory, coordination of body functions
stem cell
(animal) a cell that can differentiate into into many diff cell types
cellular differentiation
cell becomes specialized to perform specific function
what can stem cells differentiate into
epithelial muscle and nerve tissues
two types of stem cells
- embryonic (differentiate into any kind of cell)
- tissue stem cells (exist within specialized tissue, can only differentiate into certain type of cells)
